What it is
Androgens are a group of hormones that includes testosterone and DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone). Women make them too, in smaller amounts than men. Some clinicians include a low dose of an androgen in a woman’s hormone therapy plan after reviewing symptoms and lab results.
FDA-approved testosterone products are made in strengths intended for men. A prescriber who wants a lower dose for a woman may therefore order a compounded preparation in the exact strength needed.
Dosage forms we compound
- Topical cream or gel with metered dosing.
- Oral capsules or troches, when prescribed.
- Strengths matched to the prescriber’s order.
How to get it
- Patients: ask your prescriber to send the prescription to AccuMix Pharmacy by e-prescription or fax.
- Providers and clinics: see our Providers page, or call 866-817-5303 for a pharmacist consult. Testosterone prescriptions must come from a DEA-registered prescriber.
We dispense only on a valid prescription for a named patient; nothing is sold through this website. Our turnaround time is 24 hours. We ship to the 39 states and Washington, DC where we hold a license, and controlled substances only where the law permits.
How it is made
Compounded under USP <795>, with USP <800> controls for hazardous ingredients, by a team led by board-certified pharmacists. Ingredients come from FDA-registered suppliers and are verified against a certificate of analysis. A pharmacist checks each step, and every preparation is traceable by lot.
Safety and what to expect
- Use exactly as prescribed, and keep the lab appointments your prescriber schedules.
- Possible effects include acne, oily skin and unwanted hair growth. Report these, or any change in your voice, to your prescriber.
- Topical hormones can transfer to other people by skin contact. Wash your hands after applying, let the site dry and keep it covered with clothing. Children and pets should not touch the application site.
- Do not use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
- Testosterone is a controlled substance. It requires a DEA-registered prescriber and is dispensed only where the law permits.
Storage
Follow the storage directions and the beyond-use date (BUD) printed on your label, including refrigeration if indicated. Keep all medications out of the reach of children and pets.
Common questions
Is DHEA not sold over the counter?
DHEA is sold as a dietary supplement. A compounded DHEA preparation is different: it is made to a prescriber’s order, in a specific strength and dosage form, for one patient.
Which dosage form is right for me?
Your prescriber chooses the form and strength from your symptoms, history and lab results. We compound exactly what is prescribed, and our pharmacists can discuss dosage-form options with your prescriber.
Where is testosterone therapy for men?
See Testosterone.
Compounded medications are not reviewed or approved by the FDA. AccuMix Pharmacy is a 503A compounding pharmacy and compounds only after receiving a valid prescription for an individual patient. This page is general information, not medical advice. Your prescriber decides whether this therapy is right for you.
