What it is

Progesterone is a hormone made mainly by the ovaries. The progesterone we compound has the same chemical structure as the hormone the body makes, which is what “bioidentical” means. In hormone therapy it is often prescribed together with estrogen for patients who have a uterus.

FDA-approved progesterone products are available. A prescriber may order a compounded preparation when a patient needs a different strength or dosage form, or needs to avoid an ingredient in a commercial product.

Dosage forms we compound

  • Oral capsules in the prescribed strength.
  • Troches or orally disintegrating tablets (ODTs).
  • Topical preparations.
  • Vaginal suppositories, when clinically indicated.
  • Calendar-based labels for cyclic or rhythmic protocols.

How to get it

  • Patients: ask your prescriber to send the prescription to AccuMix Pharmacy by e-prescription or fax.
  • Providers and clinics: see our Providers page for what to include on the prescription, or call 866-817-5303 for a pharmacist consult.

We dispense only on a valid prescription for a named patient; nothing is sold through this website. Our turnaround time is 24 hours, and we ship to the 39 states and Washington, DC where we hold a license.

How it is made

Compounded under USP <795>, with USP <800> controls for hazardous ingredients, by a team led by board-certified pharmacists. Ingredients come from FDA-registered suppliers and are verified against a certificate of analysis. A pharmacist checks each step, and every preparation is traceable by lot.

Safety and what to expect

  • Oral progesterone can cause drowsiness or dizziness. Take it at the time of day your prescriber directs.
  • Use exactly as prescribed and do not change your dose on your own.
  • Tell your prescriber about any history of blood clots, stroke, liver disease or breast cancer, and if you could be pregnant.
  • Report unexpected vaginal bleeding, a severe headache, leg pain or swelling, or chest pain to your prescriber promptly.

Storage

Follow the storage directions and the beyond-use date (BUD) printed on your label, including refrigeration if indicated. Keep all medications out of the reach of children and pets.

Common questions

Can you match a cyclic or rhythmic schedule?

Yes. When a prescriber uses a cyclic or physiologic rhythmic (rHRT) protocol, we label and package the preparation to the calendar on the prescription.

Which dosage form is right for me?

Your prescriber chooses the form and strength from your symptoms, history and lab results. We compound exactly what is prescribed, and our pharmacists can discuss dosage-form options with your prescriber.

Do you compound estrogen as well?

Yes. See Estrogens.

Compounded medications are not reviewed or approved by the FDA. AccuMix Pharmacy is a 503A compounding pharmacy and compounds only after receiving a valid prescription for an individual patient. This page is general information, not medical advice. Your prescriber decides whether this therapy is right for you.
