What it is

GLP-1 receptor agonists are prescription medicines that act on the receptors for GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1), a gut hormone involved in appetite and blood sugar control. Clinicians prescribe them as one part of a weight-management plan that also includes nutrition, activity and regular follow-up.

Capsules are swallowed. FDA-approved GLP-1 tablets are available and suit many patients. A prescriber may order a compounded capsule when an approved product does not meet a specific medical need, such as a strength that is not commercially available.

What you receive

  • Capsules in the strength your prescriber orders.
  • A quantity matched to your titration schedule.
  • A label with directions, storage conditions and a beyond-use date.

How to get it

  • Patients: ask your prescriber to send the prescription to AccuMix Pharmacy by e-prescription or fax. No prescriber yet? Contact us and we can coordinate with a licensed telehealth provider in your state.
  • Providers and clinics: see our Providers page for what to include on the prescription, or call 866-817-5303 for a pharmacist consult.

How it is made

Compounded under USP <795>, with USP <800> controls for hazardous ingredients, by a team led by board-certified pharmacists. Ingredients come from FDA-registered suppliers and are verified against a certificate of analysis. A pharmacist checks each step, and every preparation is traceable by lot.

Safety and what to expect

  • Take the capsule as your label directs, including the timing with food, drink and other medicines.
  • Use exactly as prescribed and do not change your dose on your own.
  • The most common side effects of medicines in this class are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation and stomach pain. They are most likely when treatment starts or the dose goes up.
  • FDA-approved medicines in this class carry a boxed warning about thyroid C-cell tumors. Tell your prescriber about any personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN 2, pancreatitis or gallbladder disease, and if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Oral and injectable doses are not interchangeable. Do not switch between forms unless your prescriber changes the prescription.
  • Severe stomach pain, vomiting that does not stop, or signs of an allergic reaction need prompt medical attention.

Storage

Follow the storage directions and the beyond-use date (BUD) printed on your label, including refrigeration if indicated. Keep all medications out of the reach of children and pets.

Common questions

Capsule, sublingual or injection: which is right for me?

Your prescriber chooses the route based on your history, your preferences and how you respond. We compound the form that is prescribed.

Can I open the capsule or take two to make up a missed dose?

No. Swallow capsules whole unless your label says otherwise, and follow your label or call us about a missed dose.

Do you prepare other forms?

Yes: GLP-1 Injection, GIP/GLP-1 Injection and GLP-1 Sublingual.

Compounded medications are not reviewed or approved by the FDA. AccuMix Pharmacy is a 503A compounding pharmacy and compounds only after receiving a valid prescription for an individual patient. This page is general information, not medical advice. Your prescriber decides whether this therapy is right for you.
