What it is

GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) is a hormone the gut releases after a meal. It slows stomach emptying, signals fullness and supports insulin release when blood sugar is high. GLP-1 receptor agonists are prescription medicines that act on the same receptors. Clinicians prescribe them as one part of a weight-management plan that also includes nutrition, activity and regular follow-up.

FDA-approved medicines in this class are available and suit most patients. A prescriber may order a compounded preparation when an approved product does not meet a specific medical need, for example a dose step that is not commercially available or an ingredient the patient must avoid.

What you receive

  • Sterile multi-dose vial for subcutaneous injection, in the strength your prescriber orders.
  • Strengths that support gradual, prescriber-directed titration.
  • Needles, syringes and alcohol swabs included where state law permits.
  • A patient guide with step-by-step injection instructions and a video, opened from the QR code on your box.

How to get it

  • Patients: ask your prescriber to send the prescription to AccuMix Pharmacy by e-prescription or fax. No prescriber yet? Contact us and we can coordinate with a licensed telehealth provider in your state.

How it is made

Compounded under USP <797> in ISO Class 5 hoods inside ISO Class 7 cleanrooms, by a team led by board-certified pharmacists. Ingredients come from FDA-registered suppliers and are verified against a certificate of analysis. Every sterile batch is tested for sterility and endotoxins. Potency is tested regularly and whenever the source of an active ingredient changes. A pharmacist checks each step, and every preparation is traceable by lot.

Safety and what to expect

  • Use exactly as prescribed and do not change your dose on your own. Doses are usually increased gradually to limit stomach side effects.
  • Measure every dose carefully. If you are unsure how many units to draw up, call us before injecting.
  • The most common side effects of medicines in this class are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation and stomach pain. They are most likely when treatment starts or the dose goes up.
  • FDA-approved medicines in this class carry a boxed warning about thyroid C-cell tumors. Tell your prescriber about any personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN 2, pancreatitis or gallbladder disease, and if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Severe stomach pain, vomiting that does not stop, or signs of an allergic reaction need prompt medical attention.

Storage

Follow the storage directions and the beyond-use date (BUD) printed on your label, including refrigeration if indicated. If a refrigerated shipment arrives warm, call us before using it. Keep all medications out of the reach of children and pets.

Common questions

Is this the same as a brand-name pen?

No. A compounded preparation is not an FDA-approved product and is not a generic of one. It is made for one patient on a prescriber’s order, and it comes in a vial with syringes instead of a pre-filled pen.

How often is it injected?

Your prescriber sets the dose and the schedule. Both are printed on your label.

Do you also prepare forms that are not injected?

Yes. See GLP-1 Sublingual and Oral GLP-1 Capsules. Your prescriber chooses the route.

Compounded medications are not reviewed or approved by the FDA. AccuMix Pharmacy is a 503A compounding pharmacy and compounds only after receiving a valid prescription for an individual patient. This page is general information, not medical advice. Your prescriber decides whether this therapy is right for you.
