What it is

Tadalafil belongs to a class of medicines called PDE5 inhibitors, which prescribers use for erectile dysfunction. It is the active ingredient in Cialis®. Its effect lasts longer than that of sildenafil, which allows more flexibility in timing.

FDA-approved tadalafil tablets, including generics, are widely available and suit most patients. A prescriber may order a compounded preparation when a patient needs a strength or dosage form that is not commercially available. Compounded tadalafil is not a generic and is not FDA-approved.

Dosage forms we compound

  • Oral tablets in the prescribed strength.
  • Sublingual preparations, when the prescriber considers them appropriate.
  • Strengths between the commercial tablet sizes, when ordered.

How to get it

  • Patients: ask your prescriber to send the prescription to AccuMix Pharmacy by e-prescription or fax. No prescriber yet? Contact us and we can coordinate with a licensed telehealth provider in your state.
  • Providers and clinics: see our Providers page for what to include on the prescription, or call 866-817-5303 for a pharmacist consult.

How it is made

Compounded under USP <795>, with USP <800> controls for hazardous ingredients, by a team led by board-certified pharmacists. Ingredients come from FDA-registered suppliers and are verified against a certificate of analysis. A pharmacist checks each step, and every preparation is traceable by lot.

Safety and what to expect

  • Do not take it with nitrates (such as nitroglycerin) or riociguat. Tell your prescriber if you take an alpha-blocker or blood pressure medicine, or have heart disease.
  • Possible effects include headache, flushing, a stuffy nose, indigestion, back pain and muscle aches.
  • Use only as prescribed, and no more often than your label says.
  • Get emergency care for chest pain, severe dizziness, a sudden change in vision or hearing, or an erection that lasts more than 4 hours.

Storage

Follow the storage directions and the beyond-use date (BUD) printed on your label, including refrigeration if indicated. Keep all medications out of the reach of children and pets.

Common questions

How is tadalafil different from sildenafil?

Both are PDE5 inhibitors. Tadalafil stays active in the body longer. See Compounded Sildenafil, and ask your prescriber which one suits you.

Is this generic Cialis?

No. Generic tadalafil tablets are FDA-approved products made by manufacturers. A compounded preparation is made by a pharmacy for one patient and is not FDA-approved.

Can it be taken every day?

Only if your prescriber orders a daily schedule. Follow the dose and timing on your label.

Compounded medications are not reviewed or approved by the FDA. AccuMix Pharmacy is a 503A compounding pharmacy and compounds only after receiving a valid prescription for an individual patient. This page is general information, not medical advice. Your prescriber decides whether this therapy is right for you.
