What it is

Oxytocin is a peptide hormone made in the hypothalamus and released by the pituitary gland.

The FDA-approved form of oxytocin is an injection used in hospitals during and after childbirth. There is no FDA-approved oxytocin nasal spray in the United States, so the nasal form is available only as a compounded preparation. Uses of oxytocin outside childbirth are not FDA-approved, and research on them continues. Your prescriber decides whether it is appropriate for you.

What you receive

  • Nasal spray in a metered pump bottle, in the strength your prescriber orders.
  • A label with the number of sprays per dose, storage conditions and a beyond-use date.

How to get it

  • Patients: ask your prescriber to send the prescription to AccuMix Pharmacy by e-prescription or fax. No prescriber yet? Contact us and we can coordinate with a licensed telehealth provider in your state.
  • Providers and clinics: see our Providers page for what to include on the prescription, or call 866-817-5303 for a pharmacist consult.

We dispense only on a valid prescription for a named patient; nothing is sold through this website. Our turnaround time is 24 hours, and we ship to the 37 states and Washington, DC where we hold a license.

How it is made

Compounded under USP <795>, with USP <800> controls for hazardous ingredients, by a team led by board-certified pharmacists. Ingredients come from FDA-registered suppliers and are verified against a certificate of analysis. A pharmacist checks each step, and every preparation is traceable by lot.

Safety and what to expect

  • Do not use it if you are pregnant unless your prescriber specifically directs it. Oxytocin causes contractions of the uterus.
  • Prime the pump before the first use, and use only the number of sprays on your label.
  • Possible effects include nasal irritation, headache and nausea.
  • Tell your prescriber about every medication you take and about pregnancy, breastfeeding, cancer history, and liver, kidney or autoimmune conditions.

Storage

Follow the storage directions and the beyond-use date (BUD) printed on your label, including refrigeration if indicated. Keep all medications out of the reach of children and pets.

Common questions

How do I use a nasal spray correctly?

Gently blow your nose, prime the pump if it is new, tilt your head slightly forward, and spray into the nostril while breathing in gently. Your label gives the number of sprays.

Is there an FDA-approved oxytocin nasal spray?

Not in the United States. The compounded nasal spray is made for one patient on a prescriber’s order.

Compounded medications are not reviewed or approved by the FDA. AccuMix Pharmacy is a 503A compounding pharmacy and compounds only after receiving a valid prescription for an individual patient. This page is general information, not medical advice. Your prescriber decides whether this therapy is right for you.
